UO’s DREAMers Working Group will present an info session for campus advisors on the topic of supporting the success of undocumented students, including DACA, DREAMERS/tuition equity students, undocumented, and students of mixed status families.

The mission of the UO DREAMers Working Group is to foster the unique gifts and talents of Dreamer students and promote their sense of belonging and safety as they pursue their higher education goals.

Welcome Back and Pilot Announcement

Welcome back, Advisors!

I hope you enjoyed a restful spring break and have a wonderful start of the term!

As you know, last fall we launched several initiatives to support UO’s student success goals, of which many of the initiatives were in consultation and collaboration with campus advisors. One such initiative was to develop an “Advising Syllabus” and an “Academic Advising Preparatory Worksheet” for use with all students who are in their first year at the University of Oregon. This term, the Office of Academic Advising, as well as advisors in Business, Education Studies, and General Social Science departments will be piloting the syllabus and worksheet.

Both documents are designed to help students better understand how campus advisors can help them advance their goals, as well as to help connect students to the multitude of available campus opportunities and resources. We also hope these documents can support advisors by outlining expectations for students and by encouraging students to more effectively utilize advising sessions by preparing in advance.

These documents will be available in hardcopy in the piloting units’ offices, and the documents will also be linked and accessible on the student menu of DuckWeb.  Since you will likely encounter students who have been advised in the units piloting the syllabus, we wanted to ensure you were aware of this plan and its intent.  For your reference, the (downloadable) University of Oregon Advising Syllabus Spring includes the pilot syllabus and worksheet.

Peer Advising Manager – Open Position – Application Due 4/3/2017

The University of Oregon Career Center seeks a team-oriented professional to lead the Career Center Peer Advising program.
The Peer Advising Manager manages a group of student peer career advisors to support the work of full-time, professional career advising and counseling staff and designs, develops, and delivers all aspects of the Career Center peer advising program; designs a successful drop-in advising model, and performs drop-in advising services to remain current with advising practices. This position also oversees and manages all front desk operations of the Center, becomes an expert in center’s database management tool (Duck Connect) and manages the Center’s stewardship of the UO Guest Recruiting Policy currently under review.

Winter 2017 Advising Forum

The ACAA Executive Committee invites you to participate in the second (we’re on a roll) Advising Forum.

In order to foster advising communication and collaboration across campus, the ACAA will hold one Advising Forum each term. Last term, this meeting was well attended and we all benefited by learning about relevant updates. In this upcoming meeting, the following will happen:

  • Brief presentation on relevant advising initiatives.
  • Time for relevant, cross-campus advising updates.

  • Vote on updates to the bylaws and changes to the mission of ACAA. The bylaws are attached to this email.

Study Abroad or Interning Abroad – Summer, Fall, or Academic Year 2017-2018 Scholarship Opportunities

I wanted to make sure you are aware of the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship. It is a great scholarship that is awarded to over 2,300 students each year who are studying abroad and are currently receiving the Pell Grant as part of their federal financial aid. The Gilman scholarship is up to $5,000 (or up to $8,000 for those studying a critical need language while abroad.

The application deadline is: Tuesday, March 7, 2017 by 9:59 PM Pacific Time (11:59 PM Central Time). 

ELIGIBILITY:• Undergraduate students

  • U.S. citizens only
  • Planning to study abroad in summer 2017, fall 2017, or academic year 2017-2018
  • Receiving a Pell Grant or provide proof of receiving a Pell Grant during the term of study abroad/internship abroad

The NACADA award-winning School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) advising team will present on strategies for integrating career advising with academic advising.  Topics included will be contrasting different types of paths for students related to major and career; looking at career options straight out of undergrad programs (as opposed to professions that assume graduate-level preparation); and incorporating specific career preparation benchmarks (i.e., career exploration, gaining experiences, networking, preparing cover letters and resumes) into a four-year advising timeline.  This also happens to be a topic on which the SOJC advising team will be presenting at this year’s Region 8 NACADA conference!

Department Updates Fall 2016

School of Journalism

Changes to the Media Studies minor; in effect Fall 2016 and later:

The minor is still 24 credits. However, instead of one required course (J201) and five elective courses chosen from a specific list, the minor is now two required courses (J201, J314) and four elective courses chosen from a specific list. See http://journalism.uoregon.edu/minor for more details.
J201 is offered every term. J314 is slated to be offered every fall. However, to help the transition, it will be offered in Spring 2017. Most the elective courses only have J201 and MEST minor status as prerequisites.
Students who declared the minor before the first day of Fall 2016 (Sept. 26, 2016) can still complete the older version of the minor. Any student who declared the minor Sept. 26 or later must complete the new version, even if they started the minor coursework prior to fall term. Contact sojcadvising@uoregon.edu with questions.

Psychology Department

Starting Fall 2016 psychology major and minor have a new curriculum

Psychology majors are required to complete 56 total credit hours (48 upper division, 16@ UO) in a more progressive curriculum that emphasizes coursework in psychology. Majors are required to:

  • Take Math 243 as a pre-requisite to PSY302  (Math 111 no longer acceptable)
  • Score a C or better in introductory courses (PSY201 and PSY202).
  • Majors are required to take at least 3 CORE courses at the 300 level (including at least one from Cog/Bio area)
  • Take three 400-level specialty courses of their choice (breadth no longer imposed at this level)
  • 12 credits of BI/CH/PHYS/BIOCHEM are no longer required.

Psychology minors are required to complete 28 total credit hours (20 upper division, 16@ UO) in a curriculum that emphasizes breadth across areas of psychology. Psych minors are required to:

  • Take at least 3 CORE courses at the 300 level, instead of the 400 level coursework previously required.
  • Take PSY301 and PSY302 (PSY 303 and higher coursework is no longer required).

Regional (NACADA Region 8) Award Announcements

The ACAA’s 2016 Outstanding Faculty Advisor award winner – Dr. Alisa Freedman, Associate Professor of Japanese Literature and Film Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, wins the NACADA Region 8, Excellence in Advising – Faculty Advisor Award for 2016/17!

We are thrilled that Dr. Freedman was recognized among a strong pool of regional peers for her unflagging enthusiasm for advising undergraduate students, as well as her innovative efforts to develop opportunities for mentorship that have expanded the advising environment well beyond traditional boundaries. The award further reinforces Dr. Freedman’s approaches as exemplary, and sets a high bar for the upcoming 2017 ACAA advising award nominees. Please congratulate Dr. Freedman on her noteworthy accomplishments!

Moreover, Rachel Allen, Assistant Director of Student Services in the School of Journalism and Communication, won the NACADA Region 8, Excellence in Advising – Outstanding Professional Academic Advisor Award for 2016! Please congratulate Rachel on her admirable award!

OAAA serves a constituency which includes academic advisors, academic counselors, counselors, faculty members, administrators, and others in academic and student affairs who are concerned with the intellectual, relational, developmental, and vocational needs of students. OAAA is a representative for and advocate of academic advisors and academic counselors in universities, colleges, community colleges, technical colleges and schools, public and private. It is a forum for discussion, debate, and the exchange of ideas. OAAA works to promote the recognition of the profession of academic advising in the state of Oregon.

In keeping with OAAA’s mission of supporting the development and professional growth of academic advisors and academic counselors in higher education in Oregon, we are seeking proposals that address categories such as academic counseling, community college and transfer advising, working with under-represented student populations, and culturally sensitive advising. Proposals that speak to these topics specifically through the lens of Oregon’s institutions, student populations, and legislation are especially encouraged.

Concurrent sessions at this conference will run as 50 minute blocks (inclusive of Q&A). Proposals will be evaluated based upon:

  • Relevance- Content aligns with OAAA’s mission, OAAA constituents, timeliness of topics, and/or student populations in Oregon.
  • Outcomes – Stated outcomes are clear and provide participants with specific take-away items/concepts
  • Scope – The scope and level of the proposal topic is broad and appropriate for its audience; it can be translated to apply to different types of institutions or departments.
  • Format – Session delivery format embraces various elements and methods of engagement and learning styles
