UO’s DREAMers Working Group will present an info session for campus advisors on the topic of supporting the success of undocumented students, including DACA, DREAMERS/tuition equity students, undocumented, and students of mixed status families.

The mission of the UO DREAMers Working Group is to foster the unique gifts and talents of Dreamer students and promote their sense of belonging and safety as they pursue their higher education goals.

Learn more about these students’ experiences and how we can best support them as advisors by attending this professional development opportunity!

Winter 2017 Advising Forum

The ACAA Executive Committee invites you to participate in the second (we’re on a roll) Advising Forum.

Wednesday, March 15th, 12-1pm, Chiles 125B

In order to foster advising communication and collaboration across campus, the ACAA will hold one Advising Forum each term. Last term, this meeting was well attended and we all benefited by learning about relevant updates. In this upcoming meeting, the following will happen:

  • Brief presentation on relevant advising initiatives.
  • Time for relevant, cross-campus advising updates.
  • Time for expressing concerns and sharing successes regarding policies/procedures that impact the advising community.
  • Vote on updates to the bylaws and changes to the mission of ACAA. The bylaws are attached to this email.

Please join us on Friday, February 24 for a Lunch-and-Learn session devoted to everything that you’ve ever wanted to know about advising Clark Honors College students!  Both new and experienced advisors are welcome and encouraged to attend.  Please feel free to forward this announcement to other advising contacts in your unit.

Please join us for the first ACAA Professional Development Workshop of 2017: Integrating Career & Academic Advising

Wednesday, February 1, 11:00am-12:00pm

Knight Library Collaboration Center (Rm. 122)

The NACADA award-winning School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) advising team will present on strategies for integrating career advising with academic advising.  Topics included will be contrasting different types of paths for students related to major and career; looking at career options straight out of undergrad programs (as opposed to professions that assume graduate-level preparation); and incorporating specific career preparation benchmarks (i.e., career exploration, gaining experiences, networking, preparing cover letters and resumes) into a four-year advising timeline.  This also happens to be a topic on which the SOJC advising team will be presenting at this year’s Region 8 NACADA conference!

Why: We want to create a space for information sharing between advisors with the aim of enhancing advising practices on UO’s campus by providing information, resources, and support that will benefit new and returning advisors alike.

Fall 2016 Professional Development

Please join us for the first ACAA Professional Development Workshop of the 2016-2017 school year: Advising Student Athletes at the University of Oregon

Representatives from the Services for Student Athletes (SSA) support staff will provide an overview of information related to advising student athletes. The SSA provides academic support (academic advising, tutoring, mentoring) services to approximately 500 student athletes representing many majors across campus. Campus academic advisors will learn about the services provided to student athletes, gain knowledge in areas of NCAA compliance, resources and support, questions to ask students to increase effectiveness of advising.

Join the ACAA and the Pathway Oregon Program: https://pathwayoregon.uoregon.edu/. Pathway Oregon is University of Oregon’s promise of full tuition and fees, and comprehensive support for Oregonians who are first-time freshmen, up to 2 years out of high school, and who are Pell Grant eligible. Academic Advisors will learn how to best support Pathway students as well as students who are accessing TRiO and Student Support Services.

Winter 2016 Professional Development (End of Term)

Presentation on the UO Collegiate Recovery Center:

Wednesday, March 9 at 12:00 noon

Representatives from the UO Collegiate Recovery Center (CRC) will give an overview of this relatively new campus program and will discuss the important role it plays for students in recovery.  In addition, two CRC members will share their own stories and how the CRC has helped them.  Presenters will then be open to answer questions and participate in discussion.
