NEW >3 Science class! BI/JCOM 185M: Science and Popular Media

Hello all,

The SOJC wanted to announce a fun new science class that our Science Communication team and the Biology department have been working on!

It is BI/JCOM 185M: Science and Popular Media and will go towards the Science Area of Inquiry! See the attached slide for more info on it.

Spring 2025 will be the first time this class is offered. It will be cross listed with BI and JCOM and cotaught by Mark Blaine from the Science Communication minor and Kelly Sutherland from Biology.

This is the first time the SOJC has ever had a >3 Science class under us before and we are really excited about this collaboration with biology!

Please plug to your students, especially for any who may be a bit nervous about science classes. This would be a great option for those folks who are in non-STEM majors.

Information for Advisors: Academic Residential Communities (ARCs)

Hello University of Oregon Advisors!

We hope this email finds you well! As we prepare our students to register for the Spring 2025 term, the Academic Residential Research Initiatives (ARRI) team wanted to share the attached document that outlines key information about our Academic Residential Communities (ARCs) and their associated curricula.

ARC Information for Advisors and Faculty

These communities follow a specific year-long structure that involves an ARC seminar and additional courses taken as a cohort each term. As we have many different communities across many different disciplines, it is likely one of your advisees will be a part of an ARC and may need this information.

While ARC students will receive communication about the expectations for the ARC in Spring term, we want to make sure all of our advisors have a resource to refer to in case any questions arise. See attached document for a quick rundown of our ARC program.

Please feel free to reach out to arcs@uoregon.edu if you have any questions.

Best wishes,
Jessica Winders, Victoria Robinson, and Makaal Williams

Please help recruit for a new Spanish class: SPAN 399 Spanish and Community in Lane County

Hi,

I have put together some promotional materials for a new SPAN 399 Spanish & Community in Lane County course I’ll be piloting next term. I think it will be a great opportunity for students with 300-level Spanish proficiency in many majors and minors. I’m attaching my draft syllabus for your perusal. As you can see in the attached materials, students can use it toward the SPAN major or minor, the Global Studies major, and toward the Latinx Studies minor.

The prerequisites are SPAN 203, SPAN 228 or by instructor approval (those should be fixed on the Class Schedule this week).

Could you please help me spread the word to any advisors so they can mention it to students? I’m happy to answer any questions about it if they arise.

ACAA+PE & Rec Coffee Hour

Dear ACAA colleagues, ACAA PE & Rec Center Coffee Hour Flyer
If you have already accepted the previous invite, apologies for the double invite/email. Just to clarify, this will be an in-person event, not virtual.

Join us at the Department of Physical Education and Recreation on March 7th from 9-10:30 AM to learn how we can enhance academic success and overall well-being for the UO community (students, and you too). This session will provide a look at the diverse PE classes and programming, world-class facilities, and valuable resources available to UO students, faculty, and staff members.

This is an informal opportunity to gather, have coffee and morning pastries while connecting with the PE & Rec Team to learn more. Participants are invited to tour the Student Rec Center and even stop in the Zen Zone for a 15-minute chair massage or try a quick yoga session.

Enjoy your weekend!

Best,
PE & Rec Team
