New Year, New Colleague Connections

Hello, and welcome back to a new term!

As we head into a new term, we will be continuing Colleague Connections—with the same connections as fall term. If, for any reason, you cannot continue with colleague connections this term, or it you need to switch connections, email Sarah at sharde@uoregon.edu

If you did not have the chance to sign up in the fall, but would like to now, fill out the attached (and short) survey by this Friday, January 17th: https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/389d0f3f88bd4c84b12b97a73d37d86a

Colleague Connections matches two advisors from different departments, in order to get to know colleagues that you don’t work with regularly. These meetings are informal–they are not tracked and you can chat about anything you would like. You’re welcome to connect at other ACAA events throughout the fall term, but we hope that you will meet up on your own as well!

From your ACAA Community Building Committee,

Advice: DuckWeb Maintenance this Weekend

From Heather Gustafson on the Advising Teams Channel: O365_IntroDUCKtion and General Advising

DuckWeb Maintenance this Weekend

Thank you for reaching out about DuckWeb being down this weekend and it being a deadline that students have strong feelings about.

DuckWeb will have an updated message, but sometimes students are so frustrated by the first words that DuckWeb is down that they do not read everything or scroll down on their device.

We are encouraging advisors/advising groups to use OOO messages this weekend that include something like:

DuckWeb is down for extended maintenance from 7pm on Friday, 10 January, to 10pm on Saturday, 11 January.  If you are trying to drop any or all courses email registrar@uoregon.edu from your UO email and Include all course information such as:  I want to drop MATH 100 – Beginning College Math in Winter 2024.

If a student emails you over the weekend and does nothing else advisors can submit supporting statements for a student’s petition for missing the deadline and share the original email.  We would expect a timely petition if this situation occurs.

Jesse Nelson’s farewell reception – January 14

Dear Colleagues,

As many of you may already be aware, Jesse Nelson, Assistant Vice-Provost for Advising and Accessibility, will be leaving the University of Oregon to become the Executive Director of Connected Lane County. This local non-profit supports underserved youth in their preparation for postsecondary opportunities.

I am grateful for Jesse’s leadership over the past four years. He joined UESS during the pandemic, fully remote, amidst endless back-to-back Zoom meetings. Even then, Jesse’s warmth, positive outlook, and collaborative approach to supporting students came through clearly. In his role, Jesse oversaw the Office of Academic Advising, TRIO Student Support Services, and the Accessible Education Center, and has been instrumental in advancing student success through policy revision, coordination of shared advising practices, and building partnerships with stakeholders at all levels of the institution. For so many across campus, including myself, Jesse has been a thoughtful, caring, and trusted colleague.

Please drop in for a farewell reception for Jesse Nelson on January 14, between 3:00 – 4:30pm in the Gerlinger Alumni Lounge.  I hope you will join us to wish Jesse well!

Lundquist LinQ: Drop In for LGBTQIA+ Lundquist Majors & Minors

Good morning everyone,

I hope the start of the term is treating you well!

I wanted to share an exciting new targeted drop in opportunity we are piloting this term: Lundquist LinQ. This is intended to give LGBTQIA+ students in any of Lundquist’s undergraduate majors or minors the opportunity to meet with a Lundquist advisor that is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community on a drop in basis.

Lundquist LinQ is currently in person only during this pilot, and will be available from 2pm to 4pm on Wednesdays Weeks 2 though Week 6 and Week 9 through Finals Week in Peterson 201. Please note the location, as this is down the hall from our main office to provide students the opportunity to sign in in a more private manner. I’ve attached a graphic and some colorful quarter sheets for you to share if you meet with a student that may benefit from or be interested in this opportunity!
